The devotion to the Virgen de los Dolores -also known as the Virgin of the Bitterness, the Virgin of the Pietà or, simply, the Dolorosa- comes from ancient times. It can be traced back to the origins of the Church, whenever Christians remembered the sorrows of Christ, always associated with those of his Mother Mary. The Gospels show the Blessed Virgin present, with immense love and Motherly sorrow, at the cross at the moment of the redemptive death of her Son, uniting herself to his sufferings and deserving for this reason the title of Coredemptrix.
