Antique Thomas Mayer Brown Canova Pattern sale English Staffordshire Transferware StoneWare Plate Circa 1830s
This early 19th century Staffordshire plate was made by Tomas Mayer of Cliff Bank Works in Stoke. The plate depicts a garden scene featuring a large urn resting on a sale plinth in the foreground. The image includes a boat on the water with a neoclassical temple and exotic buildings at the shoreline. The shoulder of the plate has a series of floral panels that alternate with cartouches bearing images of a small urn with masted boats in the background. The scalloped rim is finished with a series of arched shapes.
The plate is in very good condition with no cracks or repairs. As a nearly 200-year-old item, the piece shows signs of light use commensurate with age including minor wear on the face of the plate and general wear/chips to the glaze on the rim. The underside has stilt marks related to production and some minor areas of discoloration under the glaze along with irregularities in the transfer decoration. These issues are commonly found in antique ceramics and are mentioned for accuracy.
The plate measures 9.25" from edge to edge and the rim stands 1.125" from the surface on which it is displayed. The glazed foot bears the image of an urn on a plinth with a cartouche reading "CANOVA StoneWare". The plate weighs in at just under 14oz.
This highly collectible earthenware plate displays beautifully and would make a wonderful addition to an existing collection of antique English transferware or works well as a stand alone decorative accent. A lovely find!
