sale Vintage West African Ewe Doll. Hand carved sculptural figure made by the Ewe people of Ghana and Togo, West Africa. These carvings represent twins or the spirit of twins. Twins or Venovi as they are often known are good omens, but if one twin dies, a carving is obtained to represent the dead twin and is cared for similarly to the actual child. Often simple garments are made and small adornment are added to these figures.
This carved male figure measures approximately 9.5” inches tall, he is caved from exotic African hardwood and he is in wonderful vintage condition. He has broad shoulders with straight arms, a long torso with solid legs and carved boot clad feet. He has no signs of cracking in the wood but has a wonderful warm brown color with a sweet, worn facial expression and large dimpled ears, he also has some carved ridges in his neck, front and back.
