Product code: Antique William Goebel Benjamin Franklin Toby Jug, 1930s pre-Hummel Crown Mark, Benjamin Franklin sale Toby Jug, marked Foreign

A lovely light caramel coloured Benjamin Franklin Toby Jug from William Goebel. This piece was crafted between 1936 to 1949 due to the style of the backstamp with cornet and numbering. The company is most well known for it's Hummel figurines, but his piece has some interesting history!

While made in Germany, it follows the English tradition of buff ware or undecorated ceramic jugs, flasks and jugglets.

Could be used for milk, juice or even maple syrup!

Excellent vintage condition

Measures:
6 sale 1/2" (17 cm) tall
6 1/2" (17 cm) from handle to spout
3" x 3 1/4" (7.5 x 8 cm) base

Backstamp: incised coronet with "WG" Foreign S130/1

W. Gobel, or William Goebel, went into business with his father (a porcelain merchant) in the 1870s. Dad Franz had the business sense, but it was William who shone in the role of artistic direction. He took the company from dinnerware to figurines, lamps, candy dishes and vases.

In 1909, William sent his 16 year old son Louis to the U.S. to mine as a future market. I suspect that's how Benjamin Franklin ended up part of the collection!
