Notes about barrel wood displays for people who don't know anything about barrels:
•Barrel wood is not furniture grade wood. It's rustic rough sawn oak.
•Barrel heads are NOT one single piece of wood. Heads are made of several slats (staves) that are joined together. These joints are visible on top and on the sides of the heads.
•The staves may or may not be perfectly parallel, perfectly flat, or of exact same thickness. Barrels were meant to do 2 things, age bourbon, and try not to leak.
•Heads may have the staves doweled together or tongue and groove type construction.
•The tongue and groove joints style with help the barrel to seal when holding and aging bourbon. These joints can be seen on the side of the heads – they are NOT cracks and are the natural side appearance of the tongue and groove joint.
•Remember this wood was used in aging bourbon which means that was soaked. Wood swells when wet and this helps the barrel seal. The char side up on these displays was the inside of the barrel that was directly exposed to the bourbon. As the heads dry out, the wood will slightly shrink. This may cause the joints to become visible. This is 100% natural for the wood to do by means of its construction and is unavoidable due to the nature of wood. I tighten the heads as much as possible to eliminate or minimize this. But some visual separation should be expected. Any other display that is “perfect” was likely NOT a real barrel head and is imitation, or was never used to age bourbon.
•It is these details that easily validate the authenticity of the wood I'm using. All of these characteristics tell the story of barrel aging bourbon.
•Please do not feel these are defects, cracks, or carelessness in workmanship, far from it. I have to navigate all of these variables to provide you the best REAL barrel display I can.
•Look at the images and you can see all these characteristics.
•Look at my reviews and know I'm consistent with my customers.
•I explain all of this up front and honestly to 1) help educate the buyer, 2) avoid any misunderstandings or possible disappointment, and 3) show my sincerity and knowledge in what I do to craft you an ideal display
•Each is custom made at the time of order placement - hence the noted minimal handling time. These take 2-3 days days in the cleaning, sanding, fastening, clearing, drying, boring, and packing process.
