THE PRINT
Bridging the gap between the art world and the street, Keith Haring rose to prominence in the early 1980's with his graffiti drawings adorning the subways and sidewalks of New York City. Combining the appeal of cartoons with the raw energy of Art Brut artists Haring developed a distinct pop-graffiti aesthetic centered on fluid, bold outlines against a dense, rhythmic overspread of imagery like that of babies, barking dogs, flying saucers and hearts. In his subway drawings and murals, Haring explored themes of exploitation, subjugation, drug abuse, and rising fears of nuclear holocaust, which became increasingly apocalyptic after his AIDS diagnosis. The first official exhibition of Keith Haring's work was held in 1982 at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New York. Pierre Keller, the art adviser for the Montreux Jazz Festival was in attendance and subsequently met with Haring a few months later to ask him to produce a poster featuring a dancing figure for the festival. This premium quality giclee art print reproduction of the promotional sale poster for Haring's 1983 exhibition at the Galerie Watari in Tokyo, Japan has been produced on luxurious 100% cotton rag textured art paper using archival quality inks resulting in a superior print suitable for museum or gallery display.
