A time ago, art pottery was made by some 200 studios and small factories across the country, with especially strong centers of creativity in Ohio and Massachusetts. Most of these potteries were forced out of business by the economic pressures of both domestic mass-production and ultimately overseas companies as well [wikipedia]
Independent artisans were very important to pottery of all types. This cylinder shaped vase features a matte finish and etchings in sale s uniform swoop like pattern separating the dark brown glaze from the light speckled beige body. A unique juxtaposition in a slim cylinder shape. This vase is handmade and signed by its creator on the base. It is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks visible.
WHY WE LOVE IT...artisan pottery
Most pottery made today is factory made and there is nothing particularly wrong with that. Yet there are many artisans still making pottery. One can almost imagine the artisan plunked in front of a spinning wheel, shaping a lifeless, cold-wet lump of grey mass into a delicate, silhouette sprung from a secret, chamber hidden within. It is said "art as expression, not as market campaigns...will still capture our imaginations." There may be no more authentic expression than that of the potters wheel and an artisan sat next to it. Enjoy the art!
