A little about the ISLAND CLASS...
The 'Island' Class cutters began development in the early 1980s as a replacement for the aging 95' 'Cape' Class patrol boats that were nearing the end of their lifespan. The design was licensed from U.K.-based Vosper-Thornycroft and featured a nimble 110' steel hull with aluminum deckhouse. Powered by two high-speed diesel engines, the boats could slice through the waves at just shy of 30 knots. This kind of performance also earned them a reputation from the crews... the forward berthing area being nicknamed the 'anti-gravity chamber.'
The Island Class was notable not just for its overall success but also for its impact on domestic shipbuilding. Louisiana-based boatbuilder Bollinger Shipyards had built innumerable workboats for the gulf coast oil and towing industries. But building boats for the federal government was never part of their repertoire. With assistance from outside consultants, Bollinger succeeded in putting together a proposal that earned them their first first federal contract. Ultimately Bollinger would go on to build 49 Island Class cutters, 73 Protector Class patrol boats, and most recently the Sentinel Class Fast Response Cutter (FRC).
