Utopia has no future – woodcut on Kozo paper is Volkhardt Muller's contribution to The Exeter Portfolio. Volkhardt Muller is a German artist who has been living sale and working in the UK since 2002. His work spans a variety of media including print/print object, video and performance and has won national and international awards.
“Utopia has no future” is a section of a large woodcut “Shroud”, printed on an ash plank from a fallen tree near Exeter. This beautiful native species is in decline due to Ash Dieback. Volkhardt has described the act of carving a view of Sidwell Street onto this tactile plank, as a layering of a utopian vision from another era.
This hand burnished woodcut is printed on to Kozo Japanes paper in a fragmentary edition of 45. This particular print is one of five from section five of “Shroud”.
Signed and numbered by the artist in pencil.
