Dutch World War II liberation day memorial plaque to sale commemorate United States & Great Britain liberators mid-century Klei Atelier Brunssum
During WWII, Brunssum played an active role in the resistance, hiding dozens of Jewish children, who seamlessly 'merged' into the large families that were common in the catholic south at that time. With a flourishing mining industry, Brunssum accommodated many immigrants, so dark-haired children didn't stand out. Friday 14 September 1945 an announcement of the 1945 Liberation tour, run by hiking club R.K.W.S.V. Ons Zuid from Brunssum, was published in Limburgsch Dagblad (regional newspaper). The tour started at 10 AM at Prince Hendriklaan bus stop, Brunssum, the Netherlands. (http://resolver.kb.nl/resolve?urn=ddd:010416716:mpeg21:pdf). The walk was about 3 hours long. It ended at the English cemetery on Heufstraat. The registration fee was 1 gulden 20 cent and members got 50 cent off. A special tile was designed for this occasion by Klei Atelier Brunssum (http://ww2insouthlimburg.nl/brunssum.htm).
Klei Atelier Brunssum (K.A.B.) was the initiative of the Fund of Social Institutions (F.S.I.), part of the State Mines. The aim was to provide work for children of mining personnel who were physically unfit for the heavy underground or above-ground work in the mining companies. In 1938 preparations started for a clay workshop. The actual establishment of the Kleiatelier happened in 1939 in a wooden emergency building.
The first artistic director is Marianne Hellwig-Blaauw. She is a sculptor, who mainly makes religious art. She gives drawing and modeling lessons to students from the age of 14. Several freelance artists also work at the Kleiatelier. They have their own space available in the studio and make sculptures and modeling works there. Some of these artists are: Eugene Laudy, Rob Stultiens, Sjef Diederen and Father Rats. Otto Mulders also works in the Clay Atelier in Brunssum between 1941-1943 and studies at the City Academy of Maastricht from 1945-1948, after which he leaves for Norway. He becomes known as a ceramist and painter.
This wall plaque is in a good vintage condition, considering its age. It has nicks on the edges on the bottom of the item. Please see photos.
