Old ORIGINAL & STRANGE PORTRAIT, Framed Sepia Wall-hanging of Eerie Girl, Jeromes sale Studio Curiosity, Ideal Gift For Collectors of the Bizarre
This was taken at JEROME'S, a well-known chain of portrait studios set up in England during the 1920's. Customers would book a sitting and arrive in smart Sunday Best clothes to have their picture taken. A serious and expensive business.
Some people see a creepy and slightly sinister doll-like girl with an unnerving direct stare.
Others see a carefully coiffed child forced into an unnaturally stiff pose whilst holding a bunch of dull flowers and wearing awful glasses - wishing the session would soon end.
Yet despite differing opinions, most agree that the photo is both mesmerising and captivating. Taken at a turbulent time in history between two World Wars - and greatly at odds with the genteel drawing-room setting.
It's a wonderful, rare and original piece of black and white early century nostalgia which has been beautifully framed. And with the JEROME shop name still clearly visible in the corner.
Perfect for a Victorian interior design theme or to own as a permanent memento of a time which is forever gone. sale
The frame measures 14.5" or 30cms by 12" or 30cms. The actual photo is 9" x 6" or 15cms by 22cms.
